Trieste - Italy
Ljubliana - Trieste rail trip.
A spectacular train journey..initially anyway from Ljubljana. The scenery was simply stunning as we trundled along the railway line that ran on a mountainside giving views of the village and towns below. UnfortunateIy was so mesmerised by the views that I forgot to take photos.
When our tickets were checked we were told that we would have to get off at one particfular stop and then get a bus to the next station and then get back on a train for the final leg of the journey. We were reassured that the buses would be waiting etc and that most people on the train would be doing the same thing. As we drew close a lady that we had been chatting to and was travelling solo mentioned that she had been told by another train conductor that when we got off the train we would have to wait for another train that wouldn’t get us into Trieste around 8pm. This would be 3 hours later than we should have been there. Luckily something was obviously lost in traslation somewhere along the line as the first conductor was correct. Slight gasp when we saw the line up at the border and police closing different lanes. For a moment I though “oh this will be fun, everyone getting their luggage out at the side of the road to locate their passports!” But of course that was not the case and we arrived only 15 minutes late.
Trieste was very busy when we arrived…typical rush hour really. We got to our apartment and enjoyed a refreshment on the balcony watching the people, cars and many many motorcyles rushing by below us. Headed out on the gorgeous warm evening to find somehwere to eat and happend along a lovely place near the canal. Pizza is not my ‘go to’ but when in Rome…well Italy at least, we ordered one. We had one each with the idea that half of it would do for breaky the following morning. Alas, this did not come to pass, the pizza was delicious and both of us polished them off. This I regretted later that evening as my tummy was letting me know that I had eaten way more than I should have or needed to especially at that time of night.

Slight ‘oh now what arrrggghhh’ moment when we tried to get back into our apartment and the code for the door to get into the room did not work. Until Simon pointed out that I was trying to get into someone else’s room!
Following day big thunderclaps greeted us. We had read that there was an extreme weather warning for Trieste and it appeared that the weather gods had been correct in their prophecy. It did not stop us venturing out for coffee as it was still dry, just lots of noise. After a caffine boost we headed to the sea and got caught in the rain. After sheltering while it passed we headed back to the apartment to wait it out. By early afternoon the coast was clear and we set off to find the place we saw about 30 years ago.
Unfortunately we could not locate the building we’d seen at all. But fear not dear reader, Carol got her ice cream at last!! We really enjoyed Trieste even if we recognised very little of it which is hardly surprising really after 30 years!!! We did pass by some interesting monuments and wonderful views as we ambled along soaking up the vibe.
On our second and final evening here we decided to dine on fresh bread, cheeses and meat whilst sitting on the balcony watching the world go by. So glad we did. Thor and Zeus paid us another visit and the rain was torrential. We did note when walking to the train station the following morning that there didn’t seem to be any storm drains so hardly surprising that it flooded so quickly.
