Oslo - Norway
After an early start and no hiccups we arrived in Oslo. Having caught the train from the airport to the city centre we had a short 3 minute walk to our hotel. Early check in made us smile as we ditched our heavy back packs and set off to explore.
It happened to be past the yard arm…well almost… and we decided that a beer and wine was in order. Basking in the sun, chatting about what we wanted to do and also checking in with Oliver to see what he could recommend as we had just half a day here.
The Nobel Peace Centre was our museum of choice. I had never really given any thought as to how this prize came to be and it was interesting to hear the history. This was followed with a quick visit to the City Hall where the ceremony is held and medals awarded. 1 million Euros is also part of the Nobel Peace Prize. Simon was desperate to go in as he wanted to see the layout and be somewhat ready for when he is awarded this prestigious award. Once Simon got his bearings as to what entrance to use and where exactly he would have to walk to receive his award we left.
The sun had decided it had had enough of playing today and the clouds came across and started to weep at the thought of us having to pay the price of eating out in this expesive part of the world. But as seasoned travellers, and still awaiting the big lotto win to be able to splash out in Norway, we headed to the local supermarket to grab some sandwiches and a soft drink for our evening meal.
Just to put it in perspective a little….sit down for this bit…..a glass of wine and a pint of beer cost £25 ….$50!!!!!
Rumour has it…actually Simon’s research…beer and wine is cheaper in Sweden. Caitlin also informs us that it is even cheaper in Poland and that when she and Fraser visited a beer was £1 …$2 a pint!!
So enough talk of alcohol costs before we start to sound as if that’s all this holiday is about.
Tomorrow we head to Gothenburg. I keep saying we are going to find Batman and Robin but Simon assures me that it is Gothem they are from.
